Combining Korean Mythology with contemporary South Korean Issues

Korean mythology & folklore are so fascinating to me because they’re rooted in my ancestors’ creativity/imagination, showing how they responded to things like natural phenomena throughout the Korean Peninsula, as well as how they used mythological stories to pass down meaning to their children, and eventually later generations of Korean people. Unfortunately, mythology is often overlooked when appreciating Korean culture, even by Koreans themselves. Therefore, through my art, I strive to embed the meanings of these mythological stories into current issues grappling contemporary South Korean society, such as political corruption, tensions between North and South Korea, etc. Moreover, I want to be someone who’s able to pass down my own life experiences to later generations after me, which is why my portfolio also consists of personal anecdotes, such as locations and people, that I’ve abstracted to create a lasting impact.
