“Negative volume” is when an architect deliberately leaves holes & empty space in walls, ceilings, & other aspects of a building. What I find so fascinating is how negative volume can be used as openings/channels for natural light, serving functions such as interior lighting, circulation of people, and even as paths connecting worshippers to god in sacred spaces. Therefore, my portfolio consists of 3D structures that incorporate negative volume for various reasons & in various forms. I’ve created abstract sculptures with holes that cast geometric shadows, conceptual architectural designs, and finally applying these skills in a real-world scenario: a modern house situated upon a lake. The architectural drawings of the building have a dreamy/surreal theme, with abstract holes throughout the roof that allow for light from the sun to illuminate the different compartments of the building.
